As part of our value of empowering our members, and as we near the final preparations for ‘ballet exam season’ we would like to help you learn some of the basic skill sets required for a career in dance or theater. Therefore, we launched a series of videos on our youtube channel and this article is based on one of these ( How to fasten your Exam Name Tag: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8pELp-UoZPQ)

When we do an exam, we want the examiner to focus on our dancing, so it is important to make sure that there are no distractions. We therefore encourage dancers from a very young age to make sure that their name tags are sewn on securely, so that it cannot be a source of distraction. But what seems like the simple task of sewing a tag to a leotard, can prove more tricky when the leotard is on a little nervous busy body awaiting her exam, therefore we’d like to share this handy ‘exam-hack’ with you…

You will need:

  • White Thread
  • Sewing needle
  • Name Badge
  • Pins
  • Scissors

Cardboard or an old Exam Pad Back (The Secret Weapon)

Steps:

1 Double thread a needle and tie a knot at the end

2 Insert the cardboard into their leotard

3 Place the name badge in the middle, about two fingers from the top of the leotard and pin it in place

4 Sew the badge onto the leotard

*We usually use laminated cardboard name tags, which has 2 holes to fasten with

*Make sure that the knot of the thread is behind the name tag when you start sowing

5 Remove the cardboard from the leotard, and you are ready for the exam

6 Remove the name badge after the exam, by cutting the thread and gently pulling on it

And Voila, your busy body is uninjured and ready to dance excellently in her exam!
